In Ask Again, Yes, one of my favorite books of 2019, Francis Gleeson and Brian Stanhope are both rookie NYPD cops and neighbors.

Summer 2021: The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz

My Review: ★★★★☆

The Plot was one of my favorite books of the year, and it’s a great book club book because it’s unlike any you have read before. Jacob Finch Bonner was once a promising young novelist. But now, he teaches a third-rate MFA program and struggles with his writing.

Arrogant student Evan Parker renounces his teacher’s help because the plot of the book he’s writing is bound to succeed. But, the book never comes, as Evan dies.

Jacob sees this as a sign to write the novel himself. As his student predicted, it became a huge hit. But then, Jacob starts getting threatening messages calling him a thief and sets on a journey to uncover the impetus for Evan’s plot.

It’s a unique literary thriller with twists, turns, and suspense that will keep you turning the pages.

My Review: ★★★★★ (and my Book of the Year)

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow is a universally beloved tale of friendship and video games. It left me begging the book not to end, and it was one of my favorite books in recent years.

Friends since childhood, Sam and Sadie create their first blockbuster video game before even graduating college.

But, intelligence and success aren’t all glamour. Over 30 years, their friendship experiences the peaks and valleys that are characteristic of love, family, and work. However, here, they’re all mixed together.

Drawing thoughtful reference to Shakespeare’s Macbeth, it’s both plot and character-driven. At one climactic event, it becomes something remarkable. (When you get there, you’ll know it.)

It’s an unforgettable tale of identity, love, and, of course, the importance of “play” that people will discuss for years to come. Supported by Jimmy Fallon, it’s an especially great book for men.

Spring 2024: Nightwatching by Tracy Sierra

Nightwatching is a heart-pounding psychological thriller. A mother is home alone with her children during a blizzard. At night in their old home, she hears weird noises that sound like footsteps. Then, she sees a man in the shadows.

She gathers her children and hides in a concealed room with them. As she debates what to do, she gets another look at him and knows exactly who he is and exactly what he wants. It’s worse than she feared.

Summer 2024: The God of the Woods by Liz Moore

• Obama’s Reading List for Summer 2024

My Review: ★★★★★

In The God of the Woods, it’s August 1975, and a teenager disappears from her Adirondack summer camp, throwing the camp and the surrounding community into turmoil.

As the daughter of the camp’s wealthy owners, her disappearance stirs up old wounds, particularly because her older brother vanished under similar mysterious circumstances fourteen years earlier. The ensuing search reveals hidden secrets and tensions within both the affluent owners and the working-class locals employed by the camp.

I absolutely could not put this book down and read its nearly 500 pages in about two days. It’s fast-paced, immersive, and oh-so-twisty. The characters are nuanced, and the mysteries keep you guessing. At the same time, the narrative has a lot to say on several themes, from class to gender, survival, and so much more. I give it my highest recommendation.
