Have a cozy time reading with this winter reading challenge. This is the most simplified version of a seasonal reading challenge: novices can tackle a reasonable amount of atmospheric reading during cold, snowy days, and the most avid readers can maintain a seasonal reading mood when so many new books are vying for their attention.

You can also download a free printable PDF bingo card (with even more seasonal prompts for ambitious readers) and Instagram story templates to track and share your progress. Let’s get literary!

Winter Reading Challenge Ideas For Adults

In creating this reading challenge, I had two very different types of readers in mind:

  1. those who want to read during other seasons but life gets in the way
  2. those who read avidly and want to be sure to incorporate seasonal reading into their TBR

These are the two most common types of readers I hear from this time of year, so this challenge is designed to help both types reach their winter reading goals with these winter lifestyle tips.

This Winter Reading Challenge has three seasonal prompts to read just one book each month:

  • December: a festive book
  • January: a winter thriller
  • February: a winter romance

December: A Festive Book

top 3 christmas books for adults.

December is the month of festive holidays! Christmas is the most obvious one to read about, but you can also consider Hannukkah, St. Lucia Day, Winter Solstice, and New Year’s Eve.

To get you started, my top three picks are A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, One Day in December by Josie Silver, and Winter Street by Elin Hilderbrand.

January: A Winter Thriller

January is the month when the cold sets in, setting the scene for snowy, atmospheric thrillers.

To get you started, my top three picks are Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie, Still Life by Louise Penny, and The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse.

February is the month of love! In honor of Valentine’s Day, this is the perfect time to indulge in a wintry romance novel.

To get you started, my top three picks are One Day in December by Josie Silver, This Time Next Year by Sophie Cousens, and The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah.

Printable PDF Bingo Card For Adults and Kids

While this reading challenge is designed for adults, I wanted to still allow for some child and young adult participation, if you so choose. The above bingo card has four seasonal prompts per month that are vague enough to encompass seasonal children’s books, too.
