Struggling with the Onyx Storm map? I’m here to help! I took hundreds of notes on the Fourth Wing series in order to make it easy for readers to read this book and theorize what’s next.

Here, youโ€™ll learn everything you need to know about โ€œThe Continentโ€ and The Isles to help you read the bestselling romantasy series. There are some spoilers, including important details from the Fourth Wing map and the Iron Flame map, but when it came to Onyx Storm, I tried to stick to general descriptions of the places and not reveal too much of what happens there. Let’s get โ€œfiredโ€ up!

Onyx Storm Map of The Continent

The Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros mostly occurs on “The Continent.” There are two kingdoms on The Continent: Navarre and Poromiel. There is also barren land on The Continent.

In Onyx Storm, outsiders refer to it as “Amarylis.” The Temple of Amari, queen of the gods, is in the province of Tyrrendor, in the kingdom of Navarre. Poromish records called it Amelekis. The kingdoms agreed to call it The Continent after the Great War, as though there werenโ€™t others beyond the sea. (Page 435 of the Kindle edition.)

The Emerald Sea is Northwest of The Continent and is largely unexplored. “I cannot imagine sustainable life beyond the Emerald Sea. “No ship has ever survived the tempests that form its ice-tipped waves, and the only sailors who return from her exploration do so defeated.” (page 224 of the Kindle edition; read more quotes from Onyx Storm) Piracy is also implied to be an issue there.

The Arctile Ocean is South of The Continent. It’s known for calm, warm waters and formerly lucrative trade routes.

The (Larger) Kingdom of Navarre

  • Navarre is mountainous and produces ore, timber, deer, and elk. It has six provinces.
    • The Province of Luceras
    • The Province of Morraine
      • Basgiath War College and the Vale, home of the dragons and hatching grounds, are located here. Just north is the Iakobos River. (Read more about the dragons in Onyx Storm.)
      • Montserrat is the military outpost where Drake Cordella was instrumental in bringing the wards down. (Read more about the characters in Onyx Storm.)
    • The Province of Elsum
      • Sumerton and Chakir were attacked during the events of Fourth Wing.
    • The Province of Deaconshire
    • The Province of Calldyr
      • Calldyr City is where King Tauri lives.
    • The Province of Tyrrendor (the largest)
      • Aretia is the capital, near the Cliffs of Dralor (which are too high for gryphon fliers), but it was burned to the ground after the rebellion. Riorson House and the Temple of Amari are there, and it also has a wardstone and hatching grounds.
      • The Medaro Pass is a treacherous cliff border that Poromish people climb into Tyrrendor.
      • Lewellen is a place there beyond the wards where Talladium is mined.
        • (Of note, Lewellen is also a person who, for a time, represents Tyrrendor in the Senarium.)
      • Trades are made at the Athebyne outpost on the border of Krovla and Tyrrendor.

The (Smaller) Kingdom of Poromiel

  • Poromiel consists of arable plains and marshlands, textiles, fields of grain, and gems.
    • The Province of Krovla
      • Queen Maraya rules. Second in line is Viscount Tecarus (whose palace is in Cordyn).
      • Onyx Storm details the second Krovlan uprising and the province’s questionable history with Deverelli.
      • Pavis is a conquered territory there.
      • Resson is the trading post that is home to the Trade Agreement binding the two kingdoms, and it is where Liam died.
      • Draithus is a populous Southern coastal city with high walls and a spiraling tower where much action in Onyx Storm occurs.
      • The Province of Braevick
        • It is bordered by the Esben Mountains, Samara (a military outpost), the Stonewater River (and Newhall, a small village where Maren’s family fled). The Northern Esbens are believed to have been the hatching grounds of the orange dragon before unification.
        • Zoloya is the second most populous city in Braevick, where Cliffsbane, their flier academy, is located.
        • Suniva is their seat of power.
        • Anca is the territory with the Amelian Citrine.
      • The Province of Cygnisen
        • It is bordered by the Esben Mountains, Samara (a military outpost), the Stonewater River (and Newhall, a small village where Maren’s family fled).

The Barrens

  • The Barrens are deserted land abandoned by dragons after the Great War ruined the land.
  • It is bordered by the Dunness River, drained of its magic. The ancestral hatching grounds of red dragons were along the limestone cliffs there.

The Isles

Note: Unfortunately, the Isles Kingdoms were not included in the map drawing on the book cover.

  • While they have no relationship with Navarre, they still trade with Poromiel.
  • Deverelli:
    • It is known to Navarre as the treacherous isle of merchants, known for its silk.
    • It is believed to be neutral and doesn’t worship gods.
    • Violet’s father believed they brokered arms.
    • Their saying is “the word is the blood,” and they withdrew troops in the second Krovlan uprising after a deal was not upheld, leading to the Midnight Massacre.
    • King Courtlyn lives there.
    • Tecarus has an estate there.
    • The capital city is Matyas Port.
  • Unnbriel
    • This is the island of Dunne, the goddess of war, a treacherous island 200 miles West of the Bay of Malek.
    • The Queen of Unnbriel rules it, and the High Priestess of Dunne resides there.
    • The countryside capital city is Eistol.
    • Soneram is a coastal port city.
  • Hedotis
    • This is the island of Hedeon, the god of wisdom.
    • It is ruled by the Triumvirate: Faris, Nairi, and Roslyn.
    • Vinirys is the coastal capital city without a port.
    • “Hedotis hasnโ€™t entered a war or aligned itself with any kingdom at war in its recorded history.” (page 423 of the Kindle edition)
  • Loysam
    • This is the island of Loial, the god of love.
    • It borders the edge of every map they have.
  • Zehyllna
    • This is the island of Zinhal, the god of luck, and it is the only island with magic. (Read more about signets in Onyx Storm.)
    • Xortrys is the capital city at the base of a waterfall.
