Chapter 27 is the spiciest chapter in A Court of Thorns and Roses. After a slowly burning romance, an “open door romance” scene with sexual detail occurs between two of the main characters.

I couldn’t kiss him deeply enough, couldn’t hold him tightly enough, couldn’t touch enough of him. Words weren’t necessary.
A very passionate kiss occurs between two of the main characters at a faerie party Under the Mountain. It is fairly explicit. There is some sexual language used to describe their feelings and actions as they touch.
(In other words, it’s not for kids.)
Thereafter, there is a forced kiss between one of the main characters and a different major character. I have included this kiss in the pages listed above in case parents want to remove them.

“With a predator’s stillness, he waited and watched as I traced the contours of his face, as I kissed every place I touched.”
A somewhat spicy kiss occurs between two of the main characters. A sex scene is described in a way that falls somewhere between closed-door and open-door romance. It’s not completely glossed over, but there isn’t a lot of detail.

ACOTAR Spice Level: Rating the Romance
The ACOTAR spice level is a 3 out of 5.
What does this mean? Here’s a more detailed explanation:
- 1: kissing and very mild romantic interactions
- 2: closed-door romance, in which sexual encounters happen, but the reader doesn’t hear details about them
- 3: a few open-door romance scenes with some details of sexual encounters
- 4: more than a few open-door romance scenes and/or more explicit details of sexual encounters
- 5: There is a lot of sex and a lot of details about it. You may need to fan yourself off while reading!
For the sake of comparison:
- I rate the ACOMAF spice level and the Fourth Wing spice level as a 3 out of 5 as well, but that book felt more explicit, especially in the language and wording.
- I rate most of Colleen Hoover’s spiciest books around a 4 out of 5.
- I rate the popular Things We Never Got Over series by Lucy Score as a 5 out of 5.
I personally prefer books with a spice level around a 1 or a 2, and I thought that the spice level of ACOTAR was just right! There’s a bit of it for those who like it, yet not too much for those who don’t.
Age Rating
ACOTAR’s age rating is for New Adults and Adults aged 18 and over due to some spicy scenes and adult content, including violence and death.
Personally, I would consider it for readers over age 16, but I would probably still remove the spiciest pages from the book. Otherwise, while there is violence and death, it feels like something a mature teen can potentially handle. After all, there is similar content in the children’s fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast, on which it is loosely based.
If you still want a more mild fantasy romance series for your teen, I recommend the bestselling Divine Rivals series.

Feyre Archeron is a nineteen-year-old huntress who lives as a peasant with her father and two sisters, Nesta and Elain, after her mother’s death and some financial troubles.
After killing a faerie wolf, she is taken to the magical land of Prythian by a masked faerie, Tamlin, as a form of retribution. In Prythian, she discovers a world that is as beautiful as it is dangerous.
