How to Eat Like a Gilmore

What does it mean to eat like a Gilmore?

What I love about the concept of eating like a Gilmore is how diverse the range of food and drink is. From Luke’s Diner coffee (obviously), to Lorelai’s and Rory’s pre-packaged and takeout everything, Emily’s and Richard’s fine dining, the college grub at Yale, and of course, Sookie’s homemade and farm-fresh delicacies.

Like books, movies, music, and other pop culture, food also plays such a huge (and memorable) role in the iconic, cult-favorite tv show.

It’s easily one of the top reasons to watch Gilmore Girls.

I mean, the show even began this way:

Lorelai: Please, Luke, please please please.

Luke: How many cups have you had this morning?

Lorelai: None.

Luke: Plus?

Lorelai: Five, but yours is better.

Luke: You have a problem.

Lorelai: Yes I do.

Below are some memorable pre-packaged Gilmore Girls food (including a very special coffee brand) and a review of the cookbooks Eat Like a Gilmore and The Official Gilmore Girls Cookbook.

Gilmore Girls Food & Snacks

The most recognizable Lorelai and Rory “Gilmore Girls” food are: pop tarts, red vines, coffee, and frozen pizza (in my humble opinion). I am linking some options on Amazon below in case you are looking to stock up on them for some Gilmore Girls re-watching.

Fun Fact: The coffee I share above is actually Scott Patterson’s (Luke Danes himself!) coffee brand. It comes in a bunch of flavors and gets great reviews.

Eat Like a Gilmore: The Unofficial Cookbook for Fans of Gilmore Girls by Kristi Carlson

Over 100,000 sold

Eat Like a Gilmore invites the reader to step into Stars Hollow, Connecticut, with an empty belly and an open heart. It actually started as an idea on Kickstarter, and its success shows just how fervent Gilmore Girls fans are about all things Gilmore, including food!

OF COURSE, it includes recipes from Luke’s Diner, Sookie’s Inn creations, Emily’s and Richard’s Friday night dinners, and even the Stars Hollow townee’s favorites. There are one hundred recipes total. It starts with an entire chapter about coffee, with recipes to make both the Sookie way (a/k/a the “right” way) and the Lorelai way (a/k/a the “easy” way). Then, it progresses into appetizers, cocktails, entrées, and desserts, all reminiscent of pivotal Gilmore Girls food moments.

These recipes from Eat Like a Gilmore stood out to me the most:

  • the Santa burger (!!!)
  • Founders Day punch
  • Luke’s pancakes
  • Sookie’s mushroom soup
  • Chinese takeout from Al’s Pancake World
  • Kirk’s favorite Patty Melt from Luke’s
  • Emily’s favorite Salmon Puffs
  • Paris’ beloved Mac n Cheese
  • Sookie’s ratatouille
  • Luke’s roasted duck at the Inn (when Sookie was bedridden)
  • Roasted squab at Emily’s and Richard’s
  • Lorelai’s candy dessert sushi for Rory
  • Taylor’s chocolate chocolate chocolate ice cream
  • Lorelai’s favorite apple tarts at Emily’s and Richard’s Christmas party
  • Dean’s Favorite Rocky Road Cookies by Sookie
  • The Birthday Girl Cocktail at Rory’s 21st Birthday Party

There are lots of pictures in Eat Like a Gilmore, and it’s easy and fun to read with references to particular episodes and more.
