Below, I share a quick reading guide separated in a table by character, signet, and notes so you can easily read and theorize what’s next in the Fourth Wing series by Rebecca Yarros. There are spoilers. Let’s clarify all the magical powers in this popular but very detailed fantasy book.

About Fourth Wing Dragons
The dragons are arguably the most beloved characters in the Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros! With varying colors, types, powers, and personalities, what’s not to love?!
The leadership of dragons in this romantasy book series is called the Empyrean. Dragons bond with humans so that humans can channel their powers for protection. Once bonded, riders can’t live without their dragons, but not necessarily visa versa, unless the bond is especially strong. However, each time a dragon chooses a rider, that bond is stronger than the last.
Some dragons are also mated to each other, which is the strongest bond type.

- Black Dragons are the smartest, rarest, most cunning, and most discerning. One hasn’t been born in the last century.
- Black Morningstartail has the same bludgeoning power of a clubtail and spikes that can eviscerate a person and a daggertail. It’s a “killing machine” and is considered one of the deadliest dragons, the smartest, most discerning, and the rarest.
- Blue Dragons are a formidable size with knife-like spikes and are ruthless, especially the Blue Daggertail. They shouldn’t be approached.
- Blue Daggertail is described as a ruthless and vicious dragon that doesn’t comply with the law and is the rarest of the Blues.
- Other blues are in service in the Esben Mountains.
- Brown Dragons should not be shown trepidation.
- Feathertail Dragons are the breed about which the least is known. They abhor violence and are not suitable for bonding because they can accidentally give their powers (which are unpredictable and unstable) to humans. They are only a few feet taller than Violet. Most feathertail gifts disappear with maturity when they begin to channel. Violet’s father studied them.
- Green Dragons are known for their keen intellect. They descend from the honorable Uaineloidsig line and are the most rational and reasonable type of dragon, making them the perfect siege weapons, especially in the case of clubtails. One should never back down from them. To approach one, lower your eyes and wait for their approval.
- Orange Dragons come in various shades, from apricot to carrot. They are the most unpredictable, and therefore, they are risky. They descended from the Fhaicorain line.
- Red Dragons should never be looked in the eye.
- Red Swordtails are nasty when they get riled up.
- Red Scorpiontails are the quickest to temper and prefer you approach them from the left and front.
About Tairn’s and Sgaeyl’s Bond
Tairn is the son of Murtcuideam and Fiaclanfuil, descended from the cunning Dubhmadinn line. He hadn’t been seen in five years and is one of the deadliest dragons.
Sgaeyl is ruthless and doesn’t abide by law. She bonded the relative of one of her previous riders, which is typically forbidden. Her last rider before Xaden was fifty years earlier.
Tairn and Sgaeyl are a mated pair. They are the strongest bonded pair in centuries. They should not be apart for more than three days.
