Is Fourth Wing spicy? Here, I’ll uncover the spicy chapters, the spice level, and more romance from the first book in the Fourth Wing Series in order by Rebecca Yarros. You’ll be fully informed, whether a parent or a reader, yet details won’t be spoiled either. Let’s “fire” it up!
Is Fourth Wing Spicy? The Quick Answer Revealed
Yes. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros is a somewhat spicy fantasy book. There is a kissing between the two main characters in chapters 22, 27, 29, and 34, and there are explicit consensual sex scenes in chapters 30 and 32.
That being said, there are 39 chapters total, so spicy romance plays a relatively small role overall. It’s more about dragons and war as a whole.
The Spice Level Uncovered
Spice Level Rating
I rated the spice level of Fourth Wing as a 3 out of 5.
So, what does this mean? Here’s a more detailed explanation:
- 1: kissing and very mild romantic interactions
- 2: closed-door romance, in which sexual encounters happen, but the reader doesn’t hear details about them (it fades to black, so to speak)
- 3: a few open-door romance scenes with some details of sexual encounters
- 4: more than a few open-door romance scenes and/or more explicit details of sexual encounters
- 5: Call it “smut” or whatever else suits your fancy. There is a lot of sex and a lot of details about it. You may need to fan yourself off while reading!
For the sake of comparison:
- I also rate the Iron Flame spice level and the Onyx Storm spice level as a 3 out of 5.
- I rate the ACOTAR spice level, the ACOMAF spice level as 3 out of 5, but it’s a bit more mild in those books.
- I rate most of Colleen Hoover’s spiciest books around a 4 out of 5.
- I rate the popular Things We Never Got Over series by Lucy Score as a 5 out of 5.
I’ll also note that I prefer books with a spice level around a 1 or a 2 (and nearly never finish a 5), and I thought that the spice level of Fourth Wing was just right! There’s a bit of it for those who like it, yet not too much for those who don’t.
Age Rating: For Adults 18+
Fourth Wing’s age rating is for New Adults and Adults aged 18 and over.
This is, in part, due to the two explicit sex scenes in it. However, also note that there are many adult themes of war throughout, such as violence and death, as well as a lot of cursing and adult language.
Would I allow a teen to read this? I probably would not. However, each parent can make that choice independently based on the information provided here.
If you want a more mild fantasy romance series for your teen, I recommend the bestselling Divine Rivals series.
Romance Tropes
Discussing the “tropes” at play is important to determine whether a book is right for you or your teen. Fourth Wing is a book with these types of romance:
- slow burn
- enemies-to-lovers
- forced proximity
The “spice” doesn’t appear until later in Fourth Wing.
